Chief Minister Oommen Chandy should urgently intervene to defuse the crisis surrounding the development of the Karamana-Kalayikkavila stretch of the National Highway, the Karamana-Kalayikkavila National Highway Action Council demanded on Tuesday.
A meeting of the council stated that the MLAs and MPs were showing unpardonable dereliction of duty on the road-widening issue.
Action council secretary S S Lalith said in a statement that the MLAs concerned were confining themselves to raising questions on the issue in the Assembly in a perfunctory manner, and that they had failed to constructively follow it up with the authorities concerned. This had led to a crisis in this project which in turn contributed to the stunting of development in the region, he said.
The widening of the Karamana-Kalayikkavila stretch of the National Highway, though listed for fast-track development, got mired in controversies over land acquisition. The narrow stretch, a major artery linking Kerala and Tamil Nadu, witnesses heavy traffic snarls during peak hours.
The government should issue the 4(1) notification for completing the project in a time-bound manner, and appoint a special team for land acquisition and construction, the action council leaders demanded.
President A S Mohankumar presided over the meeting.
