5.) Caste panchayat puts girl through 'virginity' test

A 20-year-old girl from Ahmednagar district has been placed on house arrest by her father, along with her mother. The girl's father saw this as a fitting punishment after the duo attempted to file a police complaint against the girl's husband and the caste panchayat. The girl tried to file a police complaint against her husband for abandonment after she “failed a virginity test“, The Mumbai Mirror reports.

On May 22, the girl, who is preparing to get into the police force, married a 25-year-old man from Nashik, both belonging to the Kanajarbhat community. This community has its own 'constitution' which they follow rigorously. Placing a high value on virginity in women, members of the caste panchayat wait outside after the wedding, while the couple has sex on a plain white cloth. This is supposedly a 'test' to prove that the woman is a virgin. In the girl's case, her husband said that she had not bled after sex and rejected her as his wife.

8.) 331 cases in April alone, little done to curb assaults on kids

Incidents of sexual assault against children are on a rise in the capital but little is being done to protect them, according to data submitted to Delhi high court. Cases filed under the especially legislated Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act continue to face delays in investigation and litigation, leading to slow adjudication, The Times of India reports.

10.) NGT asks states to submit worst-hit cities' pollution data in 3 weeks

The National Green Tribunal on Tuesday gave all states three weeks to prepare and present a report on pollution levels in their worst-affected cities. A bench headed by Chairperson Swatanter Kumar directed each state to submit details about two most-polluted cities in their territories, including data on pollution from dust, vehicular density and population. The matter will next come up for hearing on July 11-12, The Eonomic Times reported.

The directions came after the counsel for the automobile in dustry pleaded before the tribunal not to pass orders before hearing auto makers' contentions. Industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said vehicles with diesel engines displacing 2 litre and more are not a major cause of pollution. The contribution of these vehicles is minuscule, unlike dust which is the major source of pollution in the country, its counsel argued.
