CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation has constituted a committee to oversee assessments for property tax. This is part of the Corporation’s bid to give property tax payers clarity over the assessment and fixing of their dues.The new process for the assessment of property tax that has been put in place by the Corporation would do away with variations in the fixiation of property taxes, an official said. The procedure would also aim to bring uniformity in assessments. The approvals for the assessments will be made by the committee, which will be headed by the Additional Commissioner (Revenue & Finance). The Corporation’s Revenue Officer, City Engineer and two Assistant Revenue Officers will be the others on the committee.Under the procedures released by the Corporation on Monday, building owners would have to apply for property tax assessment to their respective Zonal Assistant Revenue Officers, who will be responsible for spot inspection of the declared properties.Once the assessments are found to be correct, the committee would give its approval, and it is at this rate that a particular building owner would have to pay as property tax.The committee will meet every Friday to decide on the proposals received through the week. A press release to this effect from the Corporation Commissioner also said the existing basic rate for property tax assessment would continue to be in force till further orders were issued.
