Higher education is controlled by commercial and political forces, says former BU VC..

BANGALORE: Terming the higher education system as ‘dirty’, former Bangalore University vice-chancellor Dr M S Thimmappa called for a student-centric education system on Monday, on the occasion of the launch of a comprehensive report on ‘Commercialization of Higher Education in India’, compiled by Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP)."Why do we have exams in March? The system should enable students to take exams when they feel they are ready. The current system imposes exams on students,” said Dr Thimmappa, adding that there was no mechanism to check students’ attitude.Speaking about the Common Entrance Test (CET), he said that it merely focuses on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and not on the skills of the candidates.“Are you trying to measure the candidate’s abilities of becoming a doctor by stressing on a few subjects that they have already written in PUC exams?” he said.“Higher education is controlled by commercial and political forces. I wish a policy barring politicians and businessmen from setting up educational institutions is introduced. This is will greatly reduce prejudice in theeducation system,” said Dr Thimmappa. He added that the only saviour of Indian higher education system  should come in the form of a revolution.“What we need is a revolution in the education sector, on the lines of the industrial and green revolutions. It is a dirty system, where the  people who can bring about change are the ones  taking advantage,” opined Dr Thimmappa.
