The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has given a green signal to a proposal for a new airport in the National Capital Region. According to reports, the proposal is now slated to be given to the Cabinet for approval.
While the new airport is most likely to be developed and operated by GMR, the company will get the first right of refusal to the project.
There is no confirmation yet on the location of the new airport, but a demand has been made for it to be set up in Greater Noida.
If the government goes ahead with the airport, some regulations will have to be amended as the current rules don't allow a greenfield to come up within 150 km of an existing airport.
Talking about the issue, MoS Aviation Mahesh Sharma said that a decision in this regard had been taken in principle, keeping into consideration the load at the Delhi airport.
"To off load Delhi of traffic congestion from pollution, we have to have an airport in nearby area down the line. It will take three years at least," said Sharma.
