THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was her liking for debates and reading that made Gopika choose Law as a subject of study and career. And discussions with her seniors at St Thomas Residential School motivated her to try out the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), a test common for all the eleven national law schools in the country. The exam, which had papers in English, General Knowledge, Logical Reasoning and Legal Reasoning, was lengthy, but not tough, admits Gopika. ‘’I knew I had an advantage when I finished writing the exam. But I never thought I would get such a top rank,’’ she said. Gopika secured the seventh rank in the country and is the topper in Kerala. What’s more, she even came up fourth in the entrance test for admission to the National Law University, Delhi, after scoring 96-per cent marks in the ISC XII examination. So, how did she manage to crack the legal entrance tests so easily. "They are basically just aptitude tests. But you also need to work out a lot of previous years’ question papers and there are also a lot of websites for GMat on the Internet, which are quite helpful,’’ she revealed.A native of Manacaud, Gopika is the only child of her parents. Her father works as a divisional engineer with BSNL, while her mother is a course director at Al Hind Institute of Travel Management. Gopika prefers to study Law at Bangalore, because it is the oldest, the best, has a strong alumni support and also because ‘it’s closer to home’."They also have this trimester system as opposed to the semester system, which has a pretty tight schedule. I think that would be challenging,’’ she said. Being an only child, would she be homesick in Bangalore? ‘’I have never stayed away from home. But right now, I am pretty excited about it,’’ said Gopika, rearing to go.
