In a perfect world, every crime would be solved and result in a just and proportionate penalty. In reality, most crimes go unsolved and many are not even reported to police. Usually when we lose a valuable item or suffer a theft, we go to the police station to file a report, hoping the police will find it. It is often challenging for the police to recover lost items. In Mysuru, however, an unusual incident took place. A stolen bike was returned to its owner by the police, even though no complaint had been filed at the police station. In 2023, Manju, a teacher residing in Salundi village in Mysuru district, parked his Hero Splendor bike in front of a shop on Manandavadi Road. When he returned from the shop after buying a few essentials, his bike was nowhere to be found. It was soon that he realised that the bike was stolen. Due to unknown reasons, Manju did not file a complaint about the theft.
Recently, the Vidyaranyapura police in Mysuru city apprehended a bike thief who had been a notorious menace in the area. During the investigation, the police obtained information from the arrested thief, leading them to recover several stolen bikes. Almost 40 bikes were recovered from the thief and among the recovered bikes was Manju’s stolen Hero Splendor.
Using the documents that were present with the bike, the police identified Manju as the owner and contacted him. They asked him to come to the police station, where they took his complaint about the stolen bike. Subsequently, the police returned the recovered bike to Manju, thus solving the case without the need for an initial report from the victim.
It is recommended to report any crime or theft that one has been subjugated to to the police in order for a seamless police procedure.
