It's undoubtedly the freshest looking film in recent months. As the lazy, Mumbai kid, Ranbir Kapoor is an able successor to Aamir Khan's Dil Chahta Hai and Hrithik Roshan's Lakshya.
Wake Up Sid opens with a snappy title track. It has the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy stamp all over it. From the heavy use of guitar to Shankar Mahadevan's singing, it sounds less of Karan Johar and more of Farhan Akhtar. Despite it's predictable feel, the song is an easy listen.
Kya Karoon is another coming of age song about self-discovery. What makes this song special is not the tune, but the minimal use of instruments. Clinton Cerejo has an unconventional voice that works well with the track.
The Farhan Akhtar feel continues in Shankar's Aaj Kal Zindagi. The track lacks novelty and sounds more like a Luck By Chance leftover.
The semi-classical Iktara thankfully breaks the coming of age mould. Extremely situational, this track might not catch your attention instantly. However it's the first song where S–E-L go beyond their comfort zone. Oops...Apparently it's not S-E-L but guest composer Amit Trivedi's song. The difference is evident.
Uday Benegal makes his entry into a Bollywood album with Life Is Crazy. This one's on fun, frolic, friendship…sounds like Dil Chahta Hai? Well the inspiration is hard to miss.
None of the tracks in the album are exactly foot tapping. Which is why the Wake Up Sid Remix is just what the doctor ordered. A Ranbir-centric music video will ensure that his fans are instantly hooked onto this track.
Going by the promos, one gets a feeling there won't be any lip syncs, and most songs will come in the background. Hai. If used well in the film, this situational score could make a greater impact post release.
Verdict: Despite the smooth feel of the album, S-E-L surprisingly avoid any experimentation in the score. It's their template sound that one has been hearing since Dil Chahta Hai.
