Mumbai: If the rains damage your car, chances are that it will languish outside a garage for months before claims are processed. The reason? There aren't enough insurance surveyors in the city.
During last year's monsoons, cars lined up outside garages and many owners had to simply wait until a surveyor could be assigned to assess the damage to the car.
Mumbai does not have enough surveyors to process insurance claims. Only one hundred new surveyors have joined the profession in the past year all over India.
"It is quite shocking that only hundred people have joined. Even I am very surprised by that. The way the number of cars are increasing, we need a lot of surveyors," says Executive Chairman, Western Automobile Association, Nitin Dossa.
But the Institute of Insurance Surveyors says that India's 12,600 surveyors are more than enough to handle the work.
"If the surveyors are not getting a proper job and livelihood, they may indulge in illegal activities. So, we don't expect calamities. So we don't need 400 to 500 surveyors," says National President, Institute of Insurance Surveyors, Mahendra Dhruva.
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) says it is training and licensing more surveyors and in an emergency, surveyors from other parts of India can be brought in to Mumbai.
