KOZHIKODE: It was five days back that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) issued a look-out circular against P K Kunjananthan, CPM’s Panoor area committee member, for his alleged involvement in the T P Chandrasekharan murder case. It shattered the ‘gentleman’ image that 62-year-old Kunjananthan had put up for himself over the past three decades. For long the consummate Mr Fix-it, he will now have to wait for someone else to come forward and fix this case. Now, some officers aver that if the police were to reinvestigate a few dozen political murders and attempted murders in Kannur during the last couple of decades, Kunjananthan’s involvement would come under critical glare.Says N Subash Babu, former SP of Kozhikode, “As per reports given by police officers then, Kunjananthan, without exposing himself to any direct involvement, had acted as a link between leaders and gangsters. According to them he used to provide monetary, medical and legal aid to many accused. But this is perhaps the first time that the police are allowed to look beyond the front men.” Not one with a known source of income, Kunjananthan, who hails from Parat within the limits of Kolavellur police station area in Kannur, rubbed shoulders with the CPM top leaders.
