THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Additional dialysis facilities will be arranged at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital in view of leptospirosis (rat fever) being reported from the Malabar region, Health Minister Adoor Prakash said. As part of strengthening awareness programmes there, the DMOs of Kasargod, Wayanad, Kannur, Malappuram and Kozhikode have been sanctioned Rs 2 lakh each. State epidemiologist Dr Sukumaran has been despatched to Kasargod to coordinate and monitor the work, the Minister said. Trained ‘Asha’ workers will visit homes for generating awareness about the disease and adopting preventive measures. All PHCs have been stocked with antibiotics to combat the fever, he said, urging the public to seek proper medical attention in the event of continuous fever.  Many of the patients who arrive at the Medical College are in a critical condition and weak to undergo dialysis. This could be one reason for the increased death toll, he said.
