Mobile Internet usage in India outstrips traffic from desktops
Mary Meeker's report also says that India now has 44 million smartphone users.

New Delhi: Mary Meeker, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers, has released her '2012 Internet Trends Year-End Update' and it also includes interesting statistics on Internet and mobile usage in India. The year-end report is an update to the 2012 Internet Trends report published in May 2012.

Highlights:

- There are 2.4 billion Internet users in the world of which 137 million are in India.

- India added 88 million new Internet years in the years 2008 to 2012.

- In the fourth quarter of 2012, India had 44 million smartphone users which account for only 4 per cent of the total mobile subscriber base. In Japan 65 per cent of mobile phone users use a smartphone. There are 1 billion smartphone users in the world.

- In India Internet traffic via mobile phones has overtaken desktop Internet usage in May 2012.
