KAMBAM: Protesters who observed a bandh in Idukki district of Kerala, seeking new dam at Mullaiperiyar, on Monday besieged Tamil Nadu Public Work’s Department sub-division office at Thekkady.A mob of over 100 persons pushed out the officers and workers from the office and locked it.PWD’s sub-division office located in Thekkady is monitoring water flow in the Mullaiperiyar Dam, which includes measurement of water levels and recording of inflow and outflow statistics. A staff quarters for the family of the officers has also been built in the area. All the major political parties of Kerala observed a total shut down at Idukki pitching for a new dam.Protesters first demanded the officials from Kerala, who were engaged in providing boating service to the tourists at Thekkady, to stop work. Few minutes later they barged into TN PWD’s sub-division office and questioned them as to why they didn’t close the office when all other government offices in the district were closed responding to the bandh call. Heated argument followed and TN PWD officials were pushed out of the premises after which doors of the office were locked.
