CUTTACK: Miscreants on Thursday conned a Barbil-based contractor and robbed Rs 5 lakh from him in broad daylight on crowded Medical Road under Mangalabag Police limits here.The contractor, Roop Chand, of the mining town of Keonjhar district was going to a diagnostic centre to get some medical investigation reports when the miscreants struck.They employed a novel method to trick Chand into leaving the money bag out in open and cashed in on the opportunity to make away with the booty.According to police sources, Chand had come down to Cuttack from Barbil in the morning to collect payment from a mining company and get some medical investigations done. He arrived by bus in the morning and had gone to Kalyani Diagnostic Centre to give his blood samples. From there he went to the company and received self cheque for Rs 5 lakh. After encashing it from the Bajrakabati Road HDFC Bank branch, he ventured to the diagnostic centre to collect the medical investigation reports and return home.As he was going by foot to the diagnostic centre on the narrow but crowded Kathgola Sahi lane, he heard someone saying something dirty has fallen on the back of his shirt. Chand stopped to check and found it to be true. He spotted a municipality tap nearby and rushed to it. In a hurry to get his shirt off and clean it, he left the bag on the road. As he took eyes off the bag, the miscreants struck in a flash and made off with it on a motorcycle.Chand has lodged a complaint with Mangalabag Police.
