CUTTACK: Even as the Millennium City was engrossed in the immersion ceremony, extortion-related crime reared its ugly head on Friday. Miscreants allegedly opened fire on the house of a small contractor at Sikharpur Korapokhari under Chauliaganj Police Limits. According to reports, the attack was allegedly carried out by gangster Chaga alias Vivekananda Sahoo of Patrasahi under Malgodown Police Limits along with two of his associates. They targeted contractor Kalu alias Somu Rout. Chaga had allegedly asked for Rs. 2 lakh as extortion money from Rout in lieu of bagging a contract for drain work in the City. The work has been estimated at Rs. 82 lakh. Kalu had reportedly expressed inability to pay such a huge sum. Police sources said Chaga confronted Kalu on Friday morning over the matter and had threatened him with dire consequences. And as the City plunged into immersion festivities, Chaga and his associates went to Kalu’s house and fired two rounds. However, no one was hurt in the firing. The miscreants then immediately fled the spot. A complaint has been lodged with the Chauliaganj Police and hunt for Chaga is on. Interestingly, Chaga had been targeted by rival gangsters in August. He was shot at Patrasahi, his own locality, on the evening of August 5, but had miraculously escaped with the bullet only scraping past his back. The attack was stated to be a fallout of the conviction of three gangsters in the 2007 Ranjan Mohalla alias Godhi murder case. Chaga had allegedly testified against them during trial which had resulted in their conviction.
