CHENNAI: It was an eye-popping moment for residents of Kamarajapuram as a foreign national in her mid-30s was freaking out in a pond in their area on Monday. She was in three-fourth trousers and a sleeveless t-shirt. However, fun and surprise slowly gave way to concern as the woman kept swimming for over two hours and failed to respond to requests to get out of water. The police had to finally drag her out and send her to the Government General Hospital for check up. She was later diagnosed as mentally disturbed. The woman was first spotted swimming in the water-filled closed quarry around 7.30 am. Locals alerted the police control room, which in turn informed the Shankar Nagar police. With the help of a few villagers, the cops tried to open a conversation with her, but she refused to speak. After several attempts failed to wean her off, they had to drag her out of water. The police suspected she was mentally ill or under the influence of drugs. They immediately sent her to the Government Hospital at Chromepet. Doctors at the Chromepet Government General Hospital ruled out the drugs angle and diagnosed her as mentally ill, after which she was referred to the Government General Hospital for treatment. “The woman seemed to be good at swimming because she was splashing around in the middle of the pond. We first sent one resident to convince her but she refused to budge. We then sent two persons and got her dragged out. It seems she was in the water for two hours,” said Inspector S A Srinivasan.Something similar was reported last week: a foreign woman - later found to be an Indian man’s wife - was seen swimming in the Besant Nagar beach. The Shankar Nagar police tried to check if the identity of both the women tally. “We found that they both were two different persons. We are now preparing a requisition letter along with the Kamarajapuram pool woman’s photo to send it to Foreigners Regional Registration Office to help identify her,” the inspector said.
