THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Medical Entrance Examination results have brought cheer to the capital district. It became the second district (along with Malappuram) to have more number of candidates in the first 1,000 ranks, with 124 candidates making it to the list.While the district secured one rank in the top ten, it also bagged the first and second ranks in the SC and ST categories respectively.In top tenThe phone rang incessantly at ‘Karunyam’ soon after 4 pm on Thursday and Bikas kept picking it up with the biggest grin he could break out into. He had ample reason. Bikas Keethadath is one among the top ten in the Kerala Medical Entrance Examination-2012 and the only rank-holder hailing from Thiruvananthapuram to achieve this distinction. His house at Kaniyapuram broke into celebrations when the results were announced on Thursday evening. But for him, it was a tale of perseverance and intense hard work. Celebration came second. Last time, his rank was somewhere beyond 2000. And this time he had expected somewhere within 50. ‘’This is fantastic, I didn’t expect this,’’ said a beaming Bikas.After a not-so-satisfactory attempt, Bikas had put himself into studies at Pala, where he had joined a training centre. Monthly tests, reviews and more tests - one year had passed without much diversions.A voracious reader, Bikas had done his plus-two at Puthukurichi Our Ladies Mercy Higher Secondary School. His mother Beela is a plus-two teacher and father Kasim Keethadath an officer at AG’s office.Bikas hopes to specialise in cardiology and serve society.Football loverMuhammed S M only had footballer Wayne Rooney for company during the last one year at Pala, where he was on an intense coaching session to get through Medical Entrance. An adorer of the game, with an all out support for Manchester United, Muhammed skipped everything else for studies to get down the scale from a rank of 3000 last year to 11th rank this time, the highest among those who appeared for the exam in the district.‘’There was nothing else. We were concentrated in studies. I only had football for a break,’’ he says. A student of Loyola School, Thiruvananthapuram, he was part of the class team and had played many inter-class games in school. Though he had not written the Engineering entrance, he is waiting for the All-India Medical Entrance results to finalise his future plans.Unlike many others, he has no idea what he will specialise in. ‘’I have just got through. I have not made any such decisions,’’ he said.Muhammed’s father Malik Ahamed is an official with the Kerala State Cooperative Agricultural and Rural Development Bank and mother Sahira is a housewife. His sister Ayisha is an engineer married to a doctor. He stays at Manacaud in the city. SC topperDevu Dilip is one among the lucky ones to secure an enviable position in the first appearance itself. Ranked 107, she became the topper in the SC category. A resident of Manvila in the capital, Devu was a student at Holy Angels’ Convent, Vanchiyoor for plus-two.‘’I had a expected good rank, but this is a blessing,’’ she said. She only had regular tuition classes to fall back upon for coaching. At home, her father P Dilip, an official with KSEB and mother Sarita, a housewife, had rendered full support.For somebody who loves singing and reading, the feat is hard-earned and much deserved. ‘’I want to specialise in Neurology,’’ she says. Her sister Ammu is a class VII student at Marion Villa school.
