MYSORE: By including 41 villages from 16 Gram Panchayats into its fold, Mysore City Corporation (MCC) is all set to become ‘Bruhat Mysore Mahanagara Palike’ and this exercise will increase the ward numbers to 100 from 65. A proposal is being prepared to move it before the council, seeking approval to send it to the state government as per the provisions of Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act-1976.According to proposal, the MCC has estimated that it will need Rs 523 crore to provide infrastructure like drinking water, underground drainage (UGD), street light, sanitation, to the new areas.Mysore city spread around 128 sq km, has recorded a population of 9.20 lakh. “If they include new villages, 1.50 lakh additional population will be added to the existing number and the total area will swell to 288 sq km. Out of 41 villages, about 11 villages are getting drinking water and UGD systems from the MCC and remaining 30 villages would need these facilities. For this, the MCC has estimated that it would need Rs 21 lakh. For the development of roads in the 41 villages an additional 402 km distance road should be upgraded. Of this, 113 km mud roads should be developed immediately. As per the estimation of Public Works Department, Rs 100 crore is needed for 402 km road development and Rs 10 crore for sanitation.Presently, the MCC has 58,128 street lights and additional 8,000 street lights are needed. The cost is estimated at Rs 10 crore and Rs 3 crore for administration charges and to pay salaries to ‘C’ and ‘D’ group employees, working in Gram Panchayats. Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna said that they have received a proposal from the authorities and they will send a copy to all party leaders. After discussion, it will be placed before the council meeting to be held soon, she said.
