KOCHI: Materials worth lakhs of rupees are left to rot in front of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) assistant engineer’s (Electrical Section) office in Njarakkal.Materials ranging from scrap metal to unused boxes of 11KV conductor lines and transformer post fill the area in front of the building adjacent to the Vypeen-Munambam State Highway.According to KSEB officials, the materials were left there as the building does not have the required facilities to store the materials.“The storeroom in the building is filled with materials that are delicate and will be harmed if not stored properly. The materials left outside will be used up within a couple of months as part of under-ground cable laying project. These materials will not get damaged so easily,” said a KSEB official at the Njarakkal office. He added that the office disposes most of the scrap iron once every week.Locals stated that apart from the obvious risk of damage due to prolonged exposure to the elements of nature, the materials also face the risk of being stolen. However, KSEB chief engineer, V V Sathyarajan said that he was unaware of such an issue.“The problem has not come to the notice of higher officials so far.It is a serious issue and will soon be addressed,” he added.
