The Maharashtra government is set to begin the long-anticipated land acquisition process for the Purandar Airport, a significant development aimed at bolstering the region’s infrastructure. State industries minister Uday Samant confirmed the news on Sunday during his visit to Pune, highlighting the project’s importance for both the state’s growth and the people of Pune.
Samant revealed that the state government is working in coordination with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to expedite the process. “The Purandar Airport project is crucial for the overall development of the state, especially for Punekars,” he said. The minister also mentioned that the process will pick up pace in the coming days. “In the next three to four days, minister of state for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol and I will hold a detailed meeting on the land acquisition. Within the next eight days, we will finalise a model for the project and subsequently begin the acquisition,” Samant added.
The Purandar Airport project has been in the works for several years, and the latest developments signal a renewed commitment to see the project through. The new airport is seen as a major step forward, aimed at reducing congestion at Pune’s current airport and catering to the rapidly growing demands of the city. Experts believe it will also boost trade, tourism, and employment in the region.
The airport project is especially significant for Pune, a city that has emerged as a major hub for IT, manufacturing, and education over the last few decades. With the city’s population and infrastructure needs growing exponentially, a second airport is seen as a necessity to sustain future growth.
Meanwhile, Samant also addressed political developments in the state, particularly concerning the forthcoming state assembly elections. When asked about the Mahayuti (BJP-led alliance) seat-sharing formula, he said, “Chief minister Eknath Shinde chaired a meeting on Saturday to discuss the seat-sharing plan. Further discussions will take place in the next round of meetings soon.”
As Maharashtra gears up for assembly polls, the development of large-scale infrastructure projects like the Purandar Airport is expected to play a significant role in shaping the political narrative. For now, the focus remains on accelerating the groundwork for a project that has long been awaited by Punekars.
