The Madras High Court has ordered maintenance of status-quo in respect of shifting K-9 police station to a community hall, which Kolathur MLA and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) treasurer M K Stalin offered to renovate using his local area development fund.
Justice V Dhanapalan ordered the status-quo on Friday while admitting a writ petition from Stalin seeking to set aside a resolution dated June 27 of the Chennai Corporation rejecting his offer of Rs 1 crore to reconstruct the community hall on SRP Koil Street (North) in Kolathur.
Stalin’s interim prayer was to restrain the Corporation from leasing out the Corporation-owned community hall for other purposes, including to house the K-9 police station.
Senior counsel P Wilson submitted that Stalin offered Rs 1 crore from his Member of Legislative Assembly Constituency Development Scheme fund of Rs 2 crore following a representation signed by 683 people, seeking to reconstruct the dilapidated community hall, which was being used by weaker and middle sections of the society for holding functions. However, the Corporation, by a communication dated August 10 this year, rejected the offer, citing a mala fide intention. The letter said that the Council had already on June 27 passed a resolution to lease out the building to a police station.
The decision to lease out the hall to accommodate the police station was illogical, arbitrary and fanciful, Wilson had contended.
