A Delhi court on Friday rejected the bail plea of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) parliamentarian Dhananjay Singh, accused of destroying evidence to shield his wife, who was arrested for torturing her maid. The maid died of injuries.
Additional Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma rejected the bail application of the BSP leader.
Delhi Police on Thursday opposed grant of bail to Dhananjay Singh, saying he had incited his spouse to beat up and ill-treat domestic servants.
Metropolitan Magistrate Gomati Manocha earlier Nov 20 dismissed the MP's bail plea. The court also directed Delhi Police to provide protection to the witnesses in the case.
The MP, claiming that the case against him was politically motivated, moved the bail plea in the sessions court.
Dhananjay Singh, who represents the Jaunpur Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested and booked for destroying evidence and violating provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.
His wife Jagriti was booked for murder, attempt to murder and for violating the Juvenile Justice Act after the maid died of injuries suffered as a result of alleged torture.
