New Delhi: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the father of the nation, was known for his use of media in furthering the causes he believed in, but during his times, cinema was not as evolved as now. Probably this was the reason behind his reservations against cinema as a medium.
Gandhiji gave his opinion about cinema in an interview with the Indian Cinematograph Committee, "Even if I was so minded, I should be unfit to answer your questionnaire, as I have never been to a cinema. But even to an outsider, the evil that it has done and is doing is patent. The good, if it has done any at all, remains to be proved."
As per the historians' accounts, Gandhiji saw just one film in his life and that was 'Ram Rajya' which was made in 1943.
Ironically, even after so many years, Mahatma Gandhi remains a popular figure for the Hindi and foreign film industries. There have been films that won accolades at all levels with Mahatma's philosophies forming their core.
