The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall after the southwest monsoon further advanced into several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Konkan and Pune on Sunday.
Over Mumbai, the monsoon has advanced two days before its normal arrival date of June 11, according to the weather department.

The IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rain over south Konkan, Goa, south Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal and North Interior Karnataka on June 9 and 10.
Heavy Rainfall Prediction in Maharashtra: Red Alert Issued
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg, an orange alert for Ratnagiri, and a yellow alert for Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad.
There are chances of extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204mm in 24 hours) over coastal Karnataka, Konkan, and Madhya Maharashtra till Monday and heavy showers will continue over these regions during the week ahead.
These areas will remain under an ‘orange’ alert till Tuesday, as the monsoon activity is likely to continue through the week ahead.
Due to the heavy showers, a part of the road in the neighbouring Palghar district of Maharashtra caved in, affecting traffic movement on the busy Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway for more than four hours on Sunday morning, they said.
Mumbai Weather In Last 24 Hours
Mumbai and its neighbouring areas received heavy rains in the last 24 hours, bringing down the mercury and providing relief to residents from the hot and humid weather, officials said on Sunday.
Various other districts of Maharashtra, including Thane, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar, Satara and Jalgaon, also received good showers on the last day.
In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, Mumbai received more than 60 mm of rainfall.
The Colaba observatory, situated in south Mumbai where most of the state government’s administrative offices are located, recorded 67 mm rainfall, while the Santacruz observatory recorded 64 mm downpours in the same period, as per the IMD
Waterlogging in Thane, Palghar Amid Heavy Rains
Thane and Palghar districts of Maharashtra witnessed heavy rains overnight, leading to water-logging in some areas, officials said on Sunday. There were reports of tree branches falling in some areas of Thane city, they said.
In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, Thane city received 37.06 mm rainfall.
Some areas in Thane witnessed water-logging due to the showers, an official at the district disaster control room said.
Heavy rains also lashed neighbouring Palghar, district disaster control cell chief Vivekanand Kadam said, adding there was no report of any untoward incident due to the downpour.
