Maharashtra bans book on Shivaji's life
The book is a translation of Kavi Parmanand's Shivabharata and has been banned for 'derogatory remarks'.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Tuesday banned the Epic of Shivaji, a book by James W Laine, published by Orient Longman.

The official reason for this ban is that the book is 'derogatory'to the Maratha leader and that the sentiments of many people, who respect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as a national hero would be hurt its contents.

Deputy Chief Minister, RR Patil said the book could spark off “social instability.”

This is not the first time Laine's books have been banned, his previous books Shivaji - Hindu King in Islamic India was also banned in Maharashtra two years ago for a similar reason.

The earlier book had triggered violent protests in some areas of Maharashtra and the Pune-based institute, Bhandarkar Oriental Research, that helped Laine research his book was ransacked.

The book is a translation of Kavi Parmanand's Shivabharata and has been banned for alleged 'derogatory remarks' and 'unpardonable references'.
