KANNUR: The Kerala Madyanirodhana Samithi has stated that the Samithi will resist all attempts to open new liquor shops in the state. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Fr Thomas Thaithottam, state president of the Samithi, said that they would hold an indefinite satyagraha in front of all the newly-sanctioned bars unless the government withdraws its decision to grant licences to new liquor shops.The government is planning to confer three-star status on some hotels with the intention of granting licences to them to open bars, and this should not be allowed, he added.Fr Thomas Thaitottam also said that an indefinite fast would be organised in front of the Secretariat if the government failed to cancel the decision.He said that the Samithi had sought the support of various communities, Church heads and prohibitionists for the agitation.
