KOCHI: If things go as planned, the ‘same-day certificate’ scheme of the Kochi Corporation will save Kochiites from long waits at the birth, death and marriage certificate counters. The public welfare scheme, that is expected to be functional by the first week of September, promises to provide the certificates on the day of application itself. The scheme also allows online registration for the certificates. In the case of birth certificates, the applicants can download the certificate and can use it for school registration. However, the stamp paper copy of the birth certificate can be obtained from the Corporation office directly. Currently, birth certificates since 2005 are available on the Corporation website.“Previously, applicants had to wait for two to three weeks to get their certificates. Under the new scheme, they can receive it on the day of registration itself. Even if some complications arise during the process, things will be sorted out within three days,” said T K Ashraf, chairman, Health Standing Committee of the Kochi Corporation. The scheme is a part of the revamping project going on at the Janaseva Kendram at the Corporation. Under the project, the prevalent Kendram office has been converted into an air-conditioned one, with a separate counter for applying and/or receiving marriage certificates and another counter for getting death and birth certificates. The entire process is computerised and will follow a token system based on the registration number of the applications. In the case of applications submitted in Palluruthy, Mattanchery and Fort Kochi, the certificate can be received from the Mattanchery office. “By the end of September, this facility will be available at all the zonal offices of the Kochi Corporation. This is our first step in the e-governance project,” said Ashraf.
