BANGALORE: The Sanskriti awards were presented at an impressive function on November 18 at the India International Centre, New Delhi for social achievements by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former president of India. And Bangalore boy, Abhishek Hazra was one among the shining candidates who was recognised for Art, a visual artist who graduated from the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology. Other candidates who made to the list were Shahida Shabnum for Literature (Kashmiri), Rana Ayyub for Journalism, Murad Ali for Music, and Vinayak Lohani for Social Achievements by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President of India. Abhishek,was born on 1977 and his work explores the intersections between technology and culture through animated shorts and performance pieces that often integrate textual fragments drawn from real and fictional scenarios. His famous project engaging with the ambivalent nature of bio-materials was exhibited at SymbioticA’s 2011 retrospective show at Trinity College, Dublin.Experts in their respective fields selected the awardees. The distinctive feature of the awards is that they are presented to young and emerging talent in the age group of 25 to 35 years. Each award carries `50,000 and a citation.The awards ceremony started with Saraswati Vandana. Thereafter,  Ashok Vajpeyi, chairman awards committee in his opening remarks welcomed the guests, explained the vision of Sanskriti Pratishthan and eulogised the concept and context of the Sanskriti awards. This was followed by a reading of the citations by Sadhna Shrivastav, who conducted the  proceedings of the function. The awardees briefly spoke about their work and were followed with a speech by the chief guest Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The function concluded with an address by Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi, trustee, sanskriti pratishthan.The sanskriti awards are conducted under the auspices of the Sanskriti Pratishthan, a Public Charitable Trust that aims to foster and preserve the cultural heritage of our country.
