NHAI project director Ramanathan said that the higher amount awarded as per the arbitration proceedings will be disbursed soon to the landowners from Vaniampara to Mannuthy which will help resume the work. The delay in the work has caused losses to the contractor of the stretch from Vadakkencherry to Mannuthy, Thrissur Expressway. ( It is this stretch which was lying in a shambles).
The issue of losses has been sorted out and the work will resume soon. ‘’A large number of rocks has to be blasted at Kuthiraan as a tunnel is proposed there. Since the area is forest land, it needed clearance from the apex court. The Supreme Court Empowered Committee on Environment has cleared the proposal now and the money has been deposited by the NHAI.
‘’The work on the Vadakkencherry-Mannuthy stretch involves laying a one-km long tunnel at a depth of 30 metres to 40 metres below the ground-level at Kuthiraan. There were also two flyovers in this section - one at Mannuthy and another at the Diana junction in Vadakkencherry,’’ said Ramanathan. He said that two days ago an agreement had been executed between the NHAI and the K N Reddy Constructions for Rs 645 crore for four-laning the 55-km Walayar-Vadakkencherry stretch. The work will begin in two months after the heavy equipment are moved to Palakkad by the contractor, he said.
