KOCHI: The memorandum concerning the renovation of the Old Railway Station here will be presented to Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi on Monday. The Old Railway Station, built in 1902 by Raja Ravi Varma, had functioned as a goods unit in the past. It ceased to function after 2000, when a goods station was opened in the Marshalling Yard, in Kochi. The Kochi Vikasana Samiti’s demand is that the station spread over 22 acres of land, which has the potential to reduce traffic in the city should be developed as a passenger MEMU service. “If the Passenger Service is started, people can easily reach their destinations, providing a better platform for the commuters within and outside the city,” the Samiti stated. With the development of the Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment terminal, LNG terminal at Puthuvype, renovation of the old Railway Station is the need of the hour, it stated. The station also has its historical relevance with Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Viceroy visiting the station. “If the Old Railway Station was renovated, many problems facing Kochi could have been solved,” the Samiti stated in a complaint which will be brought to the attention of the minister. The memorandum was prepared by the Kochi Vikasana Samiti last week.
