KOCHI: The Coconut Development Board celebrated the World Coconut Day on Friday at NEDFI Convention Centre, Guwahati, Assam. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the function.Awards for the 15 persons, who have excelled in coconut farming, industry and other coconut related activities, were also given away during the function. Kerala farmer K Balasubramaniya and Mangalore farmer Kondana Chandrashekhar Gatty received the best coconut farmer award.The best coconut processor award was received by Marico Limited, Kanjikode, Palakkad. Kerala also received award for the best coconut processor under conventional and non-conventional products. T Rajamohan, professor and head of the Department of Biochemistry, Kerala University, received the award for best researcher.Gogoi distributed the awards.Gogoi said that there was a lot of scope for coconut development in Assam and if the Coconut Development Board puts in more effort, the state has the possibility of becoming the top producer of coconut in the country.“If the farmers have access to marketing facilities, cultivation of coconut can also be increased,” he said.T K Jose IAS, Coconut Development Board chairman, delivered the welcome address. He said  it was the first time that the board is celebrating World Coconut Day in the North-East.
