KOCHI:  In a significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday reportedly took into custody a person identified as Noushad in connection with chopping off of the palm of Prof T J Joseph of Newman College, Thodupuzha.NIA sources said Noushad, hailing from Kunjunnikkara in Aluva, was held for providing alleged support to those who had direct involvement in the case. NIA sources, however, refused to divulge more details about the person. The NIA took over the probe into the palm-chopping case after the NIA Special Court in Kochi granted permission to probe the role of international fundamentalist organisations in the case. Professor Joseph, who was returning from church along with his family, was attacked in Muvattupuzha on July 4, 2010 by a gang for reportedly preparing a question paper that hurt the religious sentiments of a community.
