NEW DELHI: The Centre has given approval to the state government’s proposal to develop kole wetland and has allotted Rs 425 crore towards the same.The decision was taken at a meeting between Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and state minister K P Mohanan here on Thursday. The project will be implemented in the 13,640 hectares of kole land in between the Chalakkudy river and Bharatpuzha.“We had proposed the project with the primary objective of enhancing productivity of wetland and also to ensure livelihood security. It will also help for ecological balance and biodiversity conservation,” Mohanan said here.Though the state government had asked for Rs 800 crore, the Agriculture Ministry has agreed to sanction Rs 425 crore only, said the minister. The allotted Rs 425 crore could be used for kole land research, wind energy utilisation, de-watering mechanism, fisheries and backyard poultry.
