New Delhi: Kenya’s opposition called of mass rallies to protest the disputed presidential polls.
Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, who is in Kenya for a mediation attempt, had asked opposition leader Raila Odinga to cancel the protests. Annan will also meet President Mwai Kibaki later on Thursday.
In an interview with the German television channel ARD on Wednesday, Odinga for the first time said that he would be willing to share power with President Kibaki, on condition the opposition supplies the Prime Minister.
Odinga also wants to see strengthened the position of parliament and the judicial system.
However, the violence in Kenya continues unabated. Close to 800 people have been killed in violence after the December 27 election, and more than two and a half lakh people have fled their homes.
On Wednesday, a memorial service for victims of the post-election violence ended in mass riots.
