The Regional Transport authorities are expected to complete the procedures to finalise the number of autorickshaws running in the city within 10 days. The enumeration is carried out as part of the efforts by the Corporation to streamline the number of autorickshaw stands.
The move is also intended to minimise the number of complaints raised by the public against the unruly behaviour of auto drivers.
“Our first task was to analyse the exact number of active permits in the city. The latest assessment is that there are only 1,300 active permits out of the total 4,000 issued by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA). The number of autorickshaws in the city is higher than the number of live permits. Hence our next task is to assess the total number of rickshaws and then distribute permits to them,” said B J Antony, Regional Transport Officer.
Based on the number of autorickshaws, the Corporation will decide on the number of stands to be set up in the city. As per the initial assessment, the civic body said that a total of 160 three-wheeler stands are needed.
Steps to distribute permits will be discussed at the next RTA meeting. “We hope that the process will be completed within 10 days,” Antony said. A review meeting will be convened soon by the Corporation authorities with the City Police, Motor Vehicles Department, Public Works Department and trade union leaders to identify the spots for auto stands and relocate some of the existing ones. The decision to regularise the auto stands in the city was taken after a study conducted by the Traffic Police and Motor Vehicles Department against the backdrop of increasing number of complaints against auto drivers.
Earlier, the civic body has recommended a total of 7,000 autorickshaws to cater to the requirements of the commuters. However, the RTO said that the authorities are giving primary focus to the distribution of permits to bring the existing autorickshaws under the department’s scanner.
