DMK President M Karunanidhi today slammed ruling AIADMK government for not taking any steps in the proposed Petroleum Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region and said it was due to "political reasons" as the Ministry is headed by a DMK Minister.
The Union Cabinet in July had approved the setting up of the country's fifth Petroleum Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) in Tamil Nadu, to attract Rs 92,160 crore investments.
"Despite the Centre giving its approval for the project, the Tamil Nadu Industries department as a first step should have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Union Chemical and Fertilizers Ministry", Karunanidhi said, in his party organ 'Murasoli'.
"That is the first stage of implementation. But, even after announcing the project four months ago, steps were not taken by the Government. It is said since the (Chemicals and Fertilizers) Ministry is headed by a (DMK Leader) M K Alagiri, Tamil Nadu government is delaying the project", the 88-year-old leader said.
"If this project is set up in Tamil Nadu, it will generate eight lakh jobs. But due to political reasons, Tamil Nadu government is not showing any interest in it", he said.
Karunanidhi said Centre had evinced interest in setting up bigger ports in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal and the Shipping Ministry has sought details from Tamil Nadu to which the State government has not responded.
He also demanded that the Centre scrap its proposal to hold Common entrance test for admission in medical colleges.
"There are reports that the Centre is planning to conduct a common entrance test at the National level for admission in medical colleges. Our opinion is that the Central government should immediately intervene and take all steps to scrap it", he said.
