New Delhi: The Karnataka government has decided to go ahead with the unveiling of the statue of Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar in Bangalore despite objections by some pro-Kannada groups.
An all-party meeting was held on Sunday, which was chaired by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, to evolve a consensus on the issue.
Representatives of various Kannada organisations had also been invited to the meeting, Yeddyurappa told reporters on the sidelines of the concluding day of the two-day BJP executive meeting.
"Reciprocating Karnataka's gesture, a statue of Kannada saint-poet Sarvajna would be installed in Chennai," he said.
Yeddyurappa said the statue of the Tamil poet would be unveiled on August 9 in the presence of his Tamil Nadu counterpart M Karunanidhi.
Pro-Kannada organisations staged a walk out from the meeting in protest after the government decided to go ahead with the unveiling of the statue. They have called for a Bangalore bandh on August 9, alleging that the Karnataka government is an "agent of Tamil Nadu".
Yeddyurappa, meanwhile, has dismissed their charges. All major Opposition parties including Congress and JD(S) are supporting the government on the statue issue.
