Kannur jail: Nerve centre of murder politics
A special team probing the murder of Kerala RMP leader has received vital leads that the plot was hatched in the jail...

KOZHIKODE: Andhyeri Sura, a suspect in the murder of RMP leader T P Chandrasekharan, is the key member of a strong CPM group in the Kannur Central Jail and he had once made a jailbreak attempt, said jail authorities. Thanks to the investigation in the Kannur jail, the Special Investigation Team has received vital leads that the conspiracy was hatched in the jail and that Sura and some other political prisoners were involved in it. The probe team has reportedly reached the conclusion that the murder plans were finalised at the residence of Sura during his daughter’s marriage function on April 22, which was attended by several CPM leaders. Sura was on an emergency parole between April 18 and 25. He went back to the jail after the parole period. The call details tracked by SIT from the Pallikunnu mobile tower, near Kannur jail, also showed that phone calls had been made between a few prisoners and people in the Onchiyam area, added sources. According to Shivadas Thaipparambil, Kannur Central Jail Superintendent, Sura was transferred to the jail on August 2, 2011, following an unsuccessful jailbreak attempt while serving life imprisonment in a murder case at Cheemeni Open Jail. Sura, who reportedly has close links with the CPM leadership, was convicted in the murder of a Muslim League activist at Nadapuram in 2003. “Earlier, Sura and five others were sent to Viyyur Central Prison and Cheemeni Open Jail after they were awarded life imprisonment. He was admitted to Kannur prison on the charges that he had tried to escape from the open jail,” said Shivadas. Though his character inside the jail was marked ‘satisfactory’ in the official records, he often behaved viciously, said a few prison officials.  He was admitted with five other ‘CPM political prisoners’ at the eighth block of the prison. Jail sources  maintained that five inmates, who were granted emergency parole, are yet to come back as they have submitted application for extending the parole by one month. Panoli Valsan, a leader of CPM in Kannur district, Asokan and Prakasan, all convicted in attacking a BJP leader in Kannur, are among those who are yet to return to jail after getting parole before the murder of  Chandrasekharan. “They were sharing a cell with Sura in the central prison,” sources added.  This year, from January 1 to May 5, 46 prisoners were released on parole for a period of one month. Sources added that around 20 political prisoners have links with the CPM.
