Vael’s Billabong High International School hosted the second edition of its annual cultural programme ‘Billabong Brio- Kalakriti 2012’ on Thursday.
The events were designed to bring out the best in each student and to nurture team spirit.
Vasanthi, the school vice principal said, “As an institution, we do not believe in solo play of talents. We believe in nurturing team spirit. This is proved in the scoring criteria of the events. Teams in which all the members participate equally, will get higher scores than the team in which one student outperforms the others.”
The events were named creatively to catch the attention of students.
Apart from the usual events, there were some new ones like ‘Cooking without Fire’ ‘Chariots of Fire’ (cultural parade hoisted on a bicycle) and ‘Knock me Out’, taking the total number of events to 19.
Rohini, a teacher-coordinator of Kalakriti said, “A girl who mimed out a song and dance with just facial expressions and no music was so impressive. It was amazing to watch her do it.”
In the debating session on nuclear energy for students, arguments for and against raged from all corners .
Aarthi Ganesh, managing trustee and academic advisor of Vael’s Billabong High International School, said, “We have evolved a syllabus, which is online, for the teacher to know it beforehand. We believe in giving the students a complete experimental learning mileu. For example, for the lesson ‘An Owl in the Dark’, we made sure that the child understood the environment that an owl lives in, by reading out the lesson after the sun had gone down.”
Twelve international schools participated in the event, which continued on Friday as well.
