Lucknow: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau kicked of his week-long India tour with a visit to the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra on Sunday.

Along with his wife Sophie Gregoire and three children - Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien – he reached Agra around 10.30 am and visited the historic monument. He described it as "one of the most beautiful places in the world" in his entry in the visitor's log book.

"For me to be able to be here on an official trip while bringing my kids with me to share this is really special and being able to enjoy this as a dad with my kids is really nice," he said.

The sanctuary was shut for around two hours to the public due to Trudeau's visit. The entry to other tourists was restored as soon as the Canadian PM left the venue.

The main objective of Prime Minister Trudeau's visit to India is to improve overall ties between India and Canada with a focus on defence and security, counter-terror cooperation, trade and investment, and tackling climate change. Both the countries are also expected to deliberate on enhancing cooperation in the civil nuclear sector.

The Canadian PM will visit Mumbai on February 20 and will also hold a meeting with top businessmen. He is also scheduled to meet people from Bollywood.

On February 21, Trudeau will travel to Amritsar where he will visit the Golden Temple and will be back in Delhi on the same day. The Canadian PM will also make a stopover at the Jama Masjid and a cricket ground in Delhi on February 22, besides delivering a lecture at a gathering of Canadian and Indian business leaders.

Trudeau will then hold wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 23. The next day, he is scheduled to address a conference of young changemakers before wrapping up his visit.
