CHENNAI: While losing your only child can be a devastating experience, not many couples would have tried to replace their parenthood status. But 50-year-old Sulochana and her husband Mani, would have had it no other way. After their 27-year-old son was killed in a tragic accident on August 10, 2010, the couple decided to have another child, less than a month later. On September 12, they walked into the Lifeline Surya Fertility Centre to have a child via in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).The reason they opted for IVF was because at Sulochana’s age, not only had she hit menopause, she had also had a tubectomy, so normal conception was out of question. Coming so soon after the death of their only child, the emotional trauma was another factor that worked against the fertility doctors. When Dr Loganayaki, the fertility expert, first attempted to induce pregnancy via IVF last February, it was unsuccessful. “These days the equipment that we have to monitor the foetus’ progress is very advanced. So the chances of having a child at an older age is also enhanced,” said Dr J S Rajkumar, the chief surgeon. Finally, after a test tube baby was implanted in Sulochana’s womb last August, the team monitored the foetus’ progress till they delivered it through C-section on April 7. The child was a boy and they are happy parents once again.
