Italian Marines plea rejected

The District and Sessions Court here on Monday dismissed a petition filed by the Italian Marines, accused in the Enrica Lexie case, seeking adjournment of trial proceedings for another four weeks.

Meanwhile, the court adjourned the hearing to September 26 as a High Court stay is in place against continuing the proceedings following a petition filed in the HC by the accused seeking translated copies of charge sheet.   The defence counsel, represented by C S Nair, argued in the petition that a petition challenging the jurisdiction of the state police in the case was pending before the Supreme Court and hence, the proceeding shall be adjourned for four weeks.   While the prosecution, represented by special public prosecutor G Mohanraj, stated that the apex court had already told to expedite the trial proceeding and the petition in the Supreme Court would not stand in the way of the proceedings in the District Court.

The court dismissed the plea stating that such a lengthy adjournment could not be granted.
