New Delhi: Pro-hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani groups rallied in Islamabad on Friday to protest against the visit of moderate separatist leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and oppose the Indo-Pak peace process.
Around 2,000 protestors marched in the rally opposing the peace process between the two countries.
The demonstrators gathered outside the city's central Red Mosque after the Friday prayers and chanted slogans against the visit, saying they will not allow any "compromise" on Kashmir issue, PTI quoted NNI news agency as saying.
Relatives of many terrorists who have been killed in the decades long battle for Kashmir were a part of the rally. They were demanding a plebiscite in the region.
Police used batons to disperse the protestors and took some of them into custody, reports said. The organisers claimed some 250 supporters were arrested ahead of the rally.
Talking to the delegation led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the Hurriyat conference, Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf said that Pakistan would not agree to any solution unacceptable to Kashmiri people and their leadership.
However, he also said that elements hostile to the peace process must be discouraged and their attempts to create misunderstanding about Pakistan's position especially in the minds of Kashmiri people should be strongly countered.
