Iron ore export scam: CBI registers five cases, raids firms

Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsThe CBI has registeredfive cases in connection with illegal iron ore export scamworth Rs 2500 crore and carried out searches at 17 locations,including in the premises of associates of jailed mining baronG Janardhan Reddy, today.Acting on the orders of Supreme Court which asked theagency to probe the scam, the agency registered five cases anda preliminary enquiry against firms and exporters allegedlyrelated with illegal mining and export of nearly 50 lakhmetric tonnes of iron ore from Belekeri port in Karnataka, CBIsources said.The agency carried out searches at 17 locations inBangalore, Karwar, Hospet and Goa.A 10-member CBI team searched the houses of KarapudiMahesh, Swastik Nagaraj and Somasekhar, who runs a transportfirm, all aides of Reddy, the sources said.Raids are being conducted in Sandur Taluk of mine-richBellary district also, they said.Those companies whose premises were searched todayinclude ILC industries, Dream Logistics, SB Logistics , SriMalikaarjuna Shipping, Greentex Industries, they said.The Supreme Court had questioned the Karnataka governmentas to how law enforcing agencies, particularly the CB-CID,were unaware of illegal mining on such a huge scale in its ownforest reserves and transportation of minerals to the Belekeriport by using around five lakh trucks over a period of 17months.It is alleged that the iron-ore was transported toBelekeri Port between January 1, 2009 and May 31, 2010 andexported to foreign companies especially China and Pakistan.first published:September 15, 2012, 11:21 ISTlast updated:September 15, 2012, 11:21 IST
