Though the girl was admitted to hospital after she was ragged and assaulted on July 18 and 19, the incident saw light only on Sunday when the girl’s father lodged a complaint with Bondapalli police after learning that his daughter lost her vocal chords permanently and her health condition turned worse. B Shamili from Koradapeta village in Bondapalli mandal joined Gayatri junior college in Gorlapadu village of the same mandal to pursue first year Intermediate a month ago. She has been staying at the hostel run by the same college and was reportedly ragged by her senior girl students at the hostel. On July 18 night, when there was a power cut in the hostel, a group of girls, suspected to be senior Intermediate students, took advantage of the darkness and attacked Shamili in her room in the absence of other roommates. Shamili sustained injuries and was admitted in a private hospital by the college management. She returned to the hostel the next day after treatment. Again on July 19 night, when there was power cut, the girls attacked her again. They reportedly tried to throttle her with a rope. The senior students reportedly also took her ring forcibly and cut her neck with it. Two students are learnt to have caught her legs and another two gagged her with a pillow on her face. They left after she lost consciousness. This time the college management informed her parents who took her home after treatment. As she is unable to speak, Shamili narrated the incident in writing to her father. “The college director Raghava requested us not to lodge any complaint with the police and assured that he will do justice my daughter. But after learning that my daughter lost her voice completely, I had no option but to report the crime to the police,” said Shamili’s father Venkataramana, who broke down while speaking to the media at ENT Hospital in Visakhapatnam. Shamili was first admitted to King George Hospital and was later referred to the government ENT hospital for treatment. Doctors declared that the girl received severe damage to her vocal chords and had minimal chances of recovery. According to Bondapalli SI Swami Naidu, a case has been registered and investigation is on. first published:January 01, 1970, 05:30 ISTlast updated:January 01, 1970, 05:30 IST
