BHUBANESWAR: The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has advised the Nandankanan Zoological Park and other zoos to install close circuit TV cameras to monitor the newborns, large cats to be particular.A two-member team of the CZA which had inspected the Zoo to probe the death of five cubs last month recommended that special care must be taken in case of first litter and suggested that neighbourhood enclosures must be vacated.Sources said the CZA agreed with the report of the Zoo Director’s report on the incident and did not apparently find any instance of negligence.Since disturbance to the mother could cause annoyance and prompt the tigress to abandon or kill the cubs, the report said, no human presence should be allowed near their enclosures for the first two days of birth. By monitoring through CCTV, the Zoo officials could assess if the newborns have been fed properly or abandoned and take the next course of action such as necessity of hand rearing. The CZA has also advised that a delivery chamber be created near the Zoo Hospital complete with CCTV facilities and treatment facilities.Meanwhile, the Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) SS Srivastava held a hearing with the People For Animal representative who had submitted a petition with the PCCF (Wildlife) Janardhan Sharma in connection with the cub deaths. The complainant was asked to produce evidence in support of his claims.Former Chief Wildlife Warden Saroj Patnaik, who was asked to prepare an independent report by the Forest Department, has also submitted his report.
