A Boeing 737-400 airplane with 102 passengers on board went missing in eastern Indonesia on Monday, rescue officials said.

Jakarta: A Boeing 737-400 airplane with 102 passengers on board went missing in eastern Indonesia on Monday afternoon, rescue officials said.

The plane, belonging to Indonesian private airline Adam Air, left the East Javan capital Surabaya for Makassar, the provincial capital of North Sulawesi, according to an official at the Indonesian national search and rescue agency.

"We have reports that the plane lost contact at about 1500 hours IST," he said, adding that the plane was scheduled to arrive at Manado's Sam Ratulangi airport at 1600 hours IST.

The plane was carrying 96 passengers and a crew of six.
