Guangzhou: Indian men registered a convincing victory over lower-ranked Iran to win the bronze medal in the chess team competition of the Asian Games here on Friday.
P Harikrishna was the only Indian to play out a draw as the rest - Sasikiran Krishnan, Surya Shekar Ganguly and B Adhiban - won their respective matches to help India beat Iran 3.0-0.5 in the ninth and last round match at the Chess Institute.
Harikrishna split points with Ghaem Maghami Ehsan.
Sasikiran then beat Moradiabadi Elshan to give India a 1.5-0.5 lead. In the third match, Ganguly defeated Toufighi Homayoon, while Adhiban beat International Master Golizadeh Asghar in the last match to complete a convincing victory.
In the women's event, the Indians played out a draw with Vietnam to miss out the bronze medal.
Harika Dronavalli first drew against Hoang Thi Bao Tram, Tania Sachdev then split points with Pham Le Thao Nguyen to continue the deadlock.
Eesha Karavade then notched up a win over Nguyen Thi Thanh An to raise hopes of a bronze medal. However, it was not to be as Women International Master Nisha Mohota lost the final tie against Woman Grandmaster Nguyen Thi Tuong Van.
