New Delhi: India celebrates 62nd Independence Day on Friday with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh unfurling the Tricolour and addressing the nation from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort at 0730 hrs (IST).

The famed 21-gun salute follows the flag hoisting ceremony. Congress President Sonia Gandhi will also take part in the day's celebrations at the AICC headquarters at 930 hrs (IST).

India rolled out a security clampdown on Thursday with Delhi and all major cities being put on high security alert.

Nearly 17,000 policemen have been deployed across the capital. All air traffic over Delhi will be restricted during the Prime Minister's speech.

Snipers too will keep a close guard from high rises around the Red Fort. Security has also been tightened across Kashmir and several North Eastern states.

"We have geared up resources and will have anti-air attack systems in place in the capital. Some areas have been declared no-fly zones," Delhi police spokesman, Rajan Bhagat, told Reuters.
