Late Malayalam actor Sathyan was known for his strong and versatile roles in Malayalam classics like Udhyogastha, Snehaseema, Nairu Pidicha Pulivalu, Veettu Mrugam and Mudiyanaya Puthrian. Sathyan joined films at the relatively middle age of 40. Few people know that before joining films, Sathyan was also a soldier in the British Indian Army and later a police officer with the Travancore State Police.

During his tenure as a police officer, Sathyan was, for quite some years, posted at the Alappuzha police station. The old police station building, where he was employed is still there although it is defunct. It is in front of the new Alappuzha South Police Station. This old building, from time to time attracts visitors as it has been a crucial part of Sathyan’s legacy. The building is currently in a dilapidated state.

On November 9, 1912, Sathyan was born as the eldest son to Manuel and Lilly Amma in Aramada, a village near Tirumala in Travancore. Following the completion of the Vidwan exam, which was regarded as the highest academic achievement at the time, Sathyan sought employment as a school teacher. Subsequently, he served in the secretariat for a year before joining the Army in 1941. He became a member of the British Army’s Manipur Corps.

After serving in the army, Sathyan joined the police in Travancore and served in the Alappuzha police station during the communist revolution. He was known as Nadar Inspector. Sathyan was an inspector at the Alappuzha police station during the Punnapra Vayalar struggle led by the Communist Party in 1946. It was during his tenure at the Alappuzha police station that Sathyan decided to pursue acting as a full-time career.

During that period, he participated in numerous amateur plays, igniting a deep interest in acting within him. His encounter with film musician Sebastian Kunjukunju Bhagavathar occurred while he was serving as an Inspector at the Alappuzha North Police Station. Bhagavathar swiftly introduced him to the world of cinema.
